Where I am, and Where I Want to Go

I would like to think that I am very well informed of popular music from the 1940’s through the 1990’s whether it be rock, pop, blues, jazz, or folk just based on my love of music and the years and years that I have spent listening to all types of music.  Over the past few years, I have been looking into how different types of music has been affected by history, and more importantly how music has affected history.  This is what probably solidified my decision to become a history teacher as opposed to teaching any other subject.  I even was lucky enough to have taken a class at UNM called “Pop Music Throughout History”.  The background knowledge and music and its relevance to history and the impact that it had/has on history is what I am confident about, but I want to know how to incorporate it into my lessons and how to weave it into other aspects of my teaching.

I am excited to pass all my musical knowledge on to my students, but I need to research what are the most effective ways for me to do that.  I want to see what research has been done to see what methods of incorporating music into secondary education lessons are most effect as well as least effective.  While I may not be able to find out the answers to all my questions in this project, it will give me a good foundation that I can base future research from.  I think some other topics I would like to get more familiar with include how to differentiate lessons that have music incorporated in it, using students schema to make personal connections with the music, and finding databases that have these types of songs so I can not only use them in lessons, but show students where to find them once they are out of class.

I have started to compile a list of resources, but I expect to find more over the rest of the semester and will continue to build on this list after the semester is over.
